Trauma dressings are designed specifically to wounds where there is a significant level of blood loss. The dressing pad is large (10x18cm and highly absorbent) meaning it can absorb much larger volumes of blood in more serious wounds than traditional HSE dressings. The wound pad is centred on a highly elastic bandage which allows high degrees of pressure to be applied to the wound. The bandage is easy to fix as it comes with a simple Velcro type fastening.
Traditional HSE dressings do not have enough absorbent capacity or the ability to apply pressure to the wound. Trauma dressings have therefore been specified by the BSI for use in all British Standard Travel and Motoring first aid kits and the new Critical Injury Packs.
